Planted aquariums with high aeration and water movement create a healthy environment for the Red Lizard Whiptail Plecostomus. To further replicate their natural habitat, rocks and driftwood should be added to provide hiding spots and reduce stress. As such, a 50 gallon aquarium or larger is necessary for this species to thrive. Additionally, the aquarium should be placed in an area with some natural light to ensure the plants, fish, and other inhabitants receive the proper amount of sunlight. To ensure a healthy environment, regular water changes should be done.
Feeding the Red Lizard Whiptail Plecostomus is not difficult at all. It is not a picky eater, preferring to feed off the bottom of the aquarium on left over food and algae. To ensure optimal nutrition, supplement its diet with high-quality flake food, sinking herbivore pellets, and freeze-dried bloodworms and tubifex. With proper nutrition, it will remain healthy and active in its aquarium habitat. Additionally, regular water changes and maintenance of the tank will also ensure the Plecostomus’s longevity.
