Molly Dalmatians are a great choice for community tanks. They are peaceful and compatible with other large, peaceful fish that can tolerate hard water. In order to ensure the best possible environment for them, a tank of at least 30 gallons is recommended, and it should be densely planted with strong plants such as Java fern, Sagittaria, Vallisneria and Anubias. It is also important to provide a good filtration system to cope with their hearty appetites. While they are generally peaceful, Molly Dalmatians may pursue the young of other fish in the tank, so it is best to keep a close eye on their behavior. Additionally, frequent water changes should be carried out to ensure their health and wellbeing.
This species is highly sought after by aquarists. The male and female Dalmatian Molly can be easily identified by the difference in their fins. The male has a pointed anal fin and significantly larger dorsal fin, while the female has a rounded anal fin and a distinct pregnancy spot. To ensure the health of these fish, a 25 gallon or larger breeding tank with dense vegetation and a floating plant corner should be provided. Additionally, the female will give birth to 10-60 young approximately every 60-70 days, so aquarists should prepare to care for the young.
The Dalmatian is an omnivorous fish. It requires an algae-based Flake food, as well as freeze-dried bloodworms, tubifex, and brine shrimp.
