The Blue Unicorn Tang, scientifically known as the Acanthurus coeruleus, is an incredibly unique species of fish. Found only in the pristine waters that surround Hawaii, these tangs are a sight to behold. As juveniles, they appear silver in color, with a distinctively oval shape. However, as they mature, they gradually darken into a beautiful black and blue coloration, while also developing a long horn on their nose and a bullet-like shape. Thus, these majestic creatures provide a stunning display in any aquarium. Additionally, they are a hardy species that can thrive in a range of water conditions, making them a great choice for beginner and expert aquarists alike.
A 360 gallon or larger aquarium is essential for keeping a lionfish. Not only will this provide plenty of swimming room and places to hide, but the presence of live rock will ensure the lionfish’s safety and wellbeing. Additionally, although the lionfish is a species known for its aggression towards its own kind, it is peaceful with other fish, making it an ideal species for a community aquarium. When considering a lionfish for your aquarium, it is important to be aware of its size and propensity for aggression. With the proper preparation and understanding, a lionfish can make a wonderful addition to any tank.
Although they may eat meaty foods, it is important to offer them plenty of marine-based seaweed and algae to strengthen their immune system and reduce aggression. Feed them dried seaweed tied to a rock or use a veggie clip at least three times per week. Sea Veggies, Seaweed Salad and Ocean Nutrition are all excellent products to offer your Tang.
